Confirming & Canceling Appointments
In order to secure your initial appointment with Dr. Chutkan, we require a $200 non-refundable booking fee, which will be credited towards the cost of the appointment. You can call our office at 301-215-7700 to provide a credit card number. Please note that this $200 fee is non-refundable if you cancel your appointment. We charge this fee because Dr. Chutkan has only a limited number of appointments available for new consultations, and it is difficult to fill that spot if the appointment is then canceled.
Your appointment must be cancelled or rescheduled at least 10 business days prior to your scheduled consultation in order to avoid being charged in full for the visit. You may cancel your appointment by calling the office at 301-215-7700 or e-mailing us at admin@DigestiveCenterforWellness.com.
What is it?
Biofeedback is a behavioral therapy that incorporates the principles of learned conditioning in an outpatient setting. It is the process of getting your mind and body in sync. When considering gut health, this means training the pelvic floor muscles to respond appropriately to the signals from the brain and vice versa.
How does it work?
Sensors that detect various physiologic processes, such as muscle contraction, muscle relaxation, respiratory rate, temperature, heart rate, and blood flow, are attached to the patient in the form of a belly belt, and real-time measurements are displayed on a computer screen. Patients are trained to alter these physiologic response processes to relieve the physical and emotional symptoms associated with their disease.
The biofeedback practitioner first gathers baseline or resting measurements. Then he or she will ask you to think about something stressful to see how your measurements change. You’ll be coached in using visual imagery, guided meditation, deep breathing, and other relaxation techniques to achieve a relaxed state where the indicators begin to sync, particularly the breath and the heart rate, and the muscles begin to relax.
The biofeedback equipment allows you to monitor your body’s responses and helps you move to a more coherent, smoothly functioning state within your body. This new knowledge helps you to shift your thoughts, emotions, and physiology toward a more balanced state within. Creating balance helps to calm the gastrointestinal response – triggering improved functioning. While utilizing biofeedback you will learn exercises and strategies such as muscular relaxation, abdominal breathing, cognitive strategies, and guided imagery focused on the intestines.
For what is it used?
For decades, gastroenterologists have used biofeedback to provide symptomatic relief to patients with functional bowel disorders. It is one of the most useful strategies for treating constipation, pelvic floor disorders, anismus, and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS).
Biofeedback & Irritable Bowel Syndrome
Because stress often causes a change in bowel patterns and abdominal discomfort, it is one of the major contributing factors to the development of irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). Biofeedback can mitigate the symptoms of IBS by helping you to better monitor and change the way you handle stress. Through biofeedback you begin to recognize and gain control of your body’s stress reactions. You become familiar with “early symptom identification” so that you can intervene before your nervous system has a chance to negatively impact your gastrointestinal functioning.
Stress, anxiety, and strong emotion can also cause us to make poor food choices, sometimes even when we are not hungry. When you become more aware of what triggers your stress response, you can begin to change these behaviors.
Success with Biofeedback
Although some people require more sessions than others, biofeedback has been an extraordinarily useful part of integrative GI practices. It’s extremely helpful for the patient to see his/her heart rate decrease or temperature warm as blood vessels relax and dilate. The patient sees the changes on the computer at the same time as he/she feels the effects in his/her body. The goal is that after a few sessions the patient is able to achieve the results on his/her own without the use of sensors or a computer.
